霍夫斯特拉大学是一所历史悠久的私立大学，男女合校，无宗派的高等教育学校。学校近年来声名鹊起，各界的捐赠，也逐年增加，这所有236英亩校园的大学，遍植郁金香花50000株，在热闹繁华的纽约，能够有这么一块大校园，的确殊不多见，难怪它被形容为“二百三十八英亩的美术馆”了。此外，WIFI覆盖整个校园，下载速度可达到10MB/s。在计算机房(Hammer Lab)，上百台ThinkPad和iMac供你使用，而且学生可以免费打印。校园分为南北校区。南校区以办公楼和教学楼为主，北校区以宿舍楼和各种运动场地和何时为主。北校区的亮点是一大堆的宿舍楼、停车场、运动场以及健身房(Fitness Center)。健身房室内拥有40多台最新型的Cardio Pieces，50多台Cybex StrengthTraining Pieces，瑜伽室，有氧运动室，室内循环报道，6个篮球场地以及很多运动器械。此外，学校还有独立的游泳池供学生免费使用。

霍夫斯特拉大学(Hofstra University)的前身是纽约大学(New York University)1935年在长岛开设的分校，1937年独立为霍夫斯特拉学院(Hofstra College)，并与1963年正式改名为霍夫斯特拉大学。霍夫斯特拉大学持续被“美国新闻”，“普林斯顿评论”，“Fiske”，“华盛顿月报”以及 “福布斯”评选为最佳大学之一， 并获《美国新闻与世界报道》评为一类国家级大学，2011年学术声誉全美排名第128名。
这所学校今年因举行了一系列非常重要的总统级会议而著名。前任美国总统克林顿所领导的白宫官员曾在霍夫斯特拉大学跟一些重要的政治任务和知识分子辩论。还有其他一些声名显赫的人物，如玛格丽特·撒切尔和霍华德·迪恩也曾在这里举行过会议或座谈会。2008年10月15 日，奥巴马与当时的竞争对手麦凯恩曾在霍夫斯特拉大学里面举办了11月总统选举前的最后一场电视辩论会。2012年10月16日，新一轮总统辩论会将在 Hofstra大学以“town meeting”形式举行。
学校在霍夫斯特拉大学文化交流中心的资助下组织了许多国际性的学术文化会议。霍夫斯特拉大学(Hofstra University)在期环球剧院中举行的一年一度的莎士比亚戏剧节已经有超过半个世纪的历史。
这所获《纽约时报》两颗星的私立大学，以美术、戏剧、法律、医学和商科最为突出。霍夫斯特拉的法学院属于美国第一级别的法学院，在2011年的US News排名84位。新成立的电视学院更因设备齐全新颖而傲视全国。但是人造卫星接收器，不是每所传统学院能负担的新设备。霍夫斯特拉大学的 Frank.G.Zarb 商学院活的AACSB提供的权威商学院本科及研究生学科认证，全世界仅有5%的商学院获得此认证。Zarb商学院的MBA，marketing 项目，排在全美前15。另外金融专业拥有全美顶尖的培训系统--Bloomberg系统。 其他值得推荐的学科还有工程、计算机科学和出版研究。 此外，SAT成绩优秀的学生还可以获得1000美元已至学费全免的奖学金。
