The University of Missouri was founded in 1839 as the first public university west of the Mississippi Riverand the first state university in Thomas Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase territory. MU provides all the benefits of two universities in one — it's a major land-grant institution and Missouri's largest public research university.
Considered one of the nation's top-tier institutions, Mizzou has a reputation of excellence in teaching and research, and is the flagship campus of the four-campus University of Missouri System. It is one of only 34 public universities, and the only public institution in Missouri, to be selected for membership in the Association of American Universities. 堪萨斯
第一次世界大战结束后，考虑到兴建城市发展的同时，应该有所属的高等学府，因此在1929年创立了密苏里大学堪萨斯分校。 一开始是一所私人性质的学府，于1963年加入密苏里大学系统。
密苏里大学堪萨斯分校是一所研究型公立大学，共有17个科系，约有50种的大学课程及近30个的硕士学位课程，也有博士班。该校既有传统专业又有新兴边缘学科专业，现有在校生约1万4千人。教育力量集中在以下三个方面：视觉和表演艺术、健康科学、城市事务(包括法律、商学、教育等)。
